Which came first, law or grace? Linearly—that is, as time unwinds itself—the law came first. But, in fact, grace was in God's heart from before the disruption of the world. Thus, God inaugurated law SUBSEQUENT to this preexistent grace in order to set the stage (provide the contrast) for a manifestation of that grace.
