In Matthew 25, Jesus told a parable about ten virgins waiting for a bridegroom. In the parable, the Bridegroom is Christ and the virgins represent Israel. The parable is about an individual Israelite's readiness to greet his or her Messiah when the Messiah returns to set up the kingdom.
Shocking revelation from the parable: Half of the virgins are locked out of the wedding feast. Why? The have no oil in their lamps—oil being representative of the spirit.
Some members of the body of Christ, reading this parable, begin to fret about missing Christ's return. I've got great news for these folks: this parable does not apply to the body of Christ. Is there a verse in Paul's letters concerning the topic of readiness that DOES apply to us? Indeed. Are we, like Israel, required to be ready and waiting for our Lord's return? Watch this
