On the heels of my presentation yesterday someone tried to make the case that Christ WAS punished by quoting Isaiah 53:5 from the NIV (I assumed it was the KJV) which says, "The punishment that brought us peace was on him." The KJV has "chastisement" instead of "punishment," which is basically a synonym for punishment.
 
The cure for this common error is to quote an accurate translation. The Concordant Version of the Old Testament has, "The discipline of our well-being is on Him."

What is the difference between discipline and punishment? Much. Punishment speaks to the satisfaction of the punisher in inflicting pain, whereas discipline speaks to the betterment of the one disciplined. Punishment suggests anger, whereas discipline describes purpose. Even in God's wrath, He never forgets purpose, and His every motivation is love.

We never find either purpose or love in the word "punishment." In a good translation, this English word is banished from any vocabulary describing God.
